About Redding, CT

Redding is a town in Fairfield County of Connecticut. According to Fairfield county and state records, from the time when Redding was formed, the original name of the town was Reading after the town in Berkshire, England. Town history, however, attributes the name to John Read who was an early major landholder. In 1767, soon after incorporation of the town, the name was changed to its current spelling of Redding to better reflect its pronunciation. The Connecticut Historic Resource Inventory lists 230 structures in Redding with the oldest building built in 1710 by early settler Moses Knapp. The Town of Redding lists another 285 structures that were built before 1901, the oldest built by John Read in 1711. Some of the attractions of the town include Collis P. Huntington State Park, Devil’s Den Preserve with trails and views of the Saugatuck Reservoir, Highstead, Lonetown Farm Museum, and Mark Twain Library. There are several movies which were, at least partially, shot in Redding like Old Dogs (2007/2008), The Stepford Wives (1975) and Valley of the Dolls (1967).
