What is Juvederm Ultra Plus?
Juvederm Ultra Plus is an FDA-approved injectable hyaluronic acid gel made with a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid. This is a complex sugar found throughout your body and it helps to hydrate and maintain connective tissues, like those in the skin. Since Juvederm Ultra Plus is identical to the hyaluronic acid that is found in your body, there are no skin tests necessary and the risk of an allergic reaction is very minimal. The Juvederm Ultra Plus is synthetically made and it does not come from humans or animals.

IF JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS IS A COMPLEX SUGAR, CAN DIABETICS USE IT?
Juvederm Ultra Plus is absolutely safe to use for diabetics. The complex sugar hyaluronic acid in the dermal filler has nothing to do with the sugar associated with diabetes.
HOW DOES JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS WORK?
Juvederm Ultra Plus is injected below the skin to lift severe facial wrinkles, depressions, scars, and facial hollows so that they are level with the surrounding skin.
WHERE IS JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS USED?
Juvederm Ultra Plus is typically used anywhere on the face (except for the hollows under the eyes) and is best suited for deep wrinkles or to replace the facial volume lost due to the aging process. Most Juvederm Ultra Plus injections are done on lines around the mouth like nasolabial folds (laugh lines) and marionette lines, or in the hollows of the cheeks.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HYALURONIC ACID?
There are two companies that make hyaluronic acid facial fillers, Medicis and Allergan. Allergan makes Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus, and Medicis makes Restylane and Perlane. There is no clinical difference between the two company’s products, except that the only product injected in the hollows under the eyes is Restylane.
Restylane and Juvederm Ultra are thinner fillers best suited for superficial fine lines or locations where the skin is thin. Perlane and Juvederm Ultra Plus are thicker dermal fillers best suited for lifting deep wrinkles or filling facial hollows (i.e. flat cheeks).
DOES JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS WORK INSTANTLY?
Yes. Injecting Juvederm Ultra Plus will work immediately to lift wrinkles, depressions, and scars, and to restore the volume lost during the aging process. Natural-looking results continue to improve for weeks after the treatment as well.
HOW LONG DOES JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS LAST?
How long a Juvederm Ultra Plus injection will last depends on the site of the injection, the individual patient, and the amount of Juvederm Ultra Plus injected. Generally, the closer you inject Juvederm Ultra Plus into the mouth, the faster the filler breaks down. The more movement in the area, the faster the product goes away. During your consultation, Dr. Stanislaw can give you a good estimate of how long Juvederm Ultra Plus will last for your area of concern.
HOW MANY VISITS ARE THERE FOR A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
Unless you have had Juvederm Ultra Plus injections before, and you know exactly what you want, there is typically a consultation prior to the injection to examine your area of concern and discuss the best treatment options. The injection process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the area and the amount to be injected. Depending on the patient, there is usually a follow-up appointment 7 to 10 days after the injection.
IS THERE DOWNTIME AFTER A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
You may experience some redness and mild swelling after the injection, but this often goes away after a day.
WILL I HAVE A BRUISE AFTER A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
There is always a chance that you may have a bruise after a Juvederm Ultra Plus injection. Different injection areas have different rates of bruising. During your consultation, Dr. Stanislaw can give you an estimate of the chance of bruising for your areas of concern. However, you must always be prepared for a bruise and schedule your injections accordingly.
HOW MUCH DISCOMFORT IS ASSOCIATED WITH A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
Since Juvederm Ultra Plus contains a numbing medication, there is usually very little discomfort associated with the injection. A topical numbing cream is always available for patients, but it must be applied to the area being treated 30 minutes to one hour in advance.
WHAT ARE MY RESTRICTIONS AFTER A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
After having a Juvederm Ultra Plus injection you are advised to keep cold packs on the injected area for the first 24 hours. On the day of the injection, bending over should be kept to a minimum. That night you should sleep with your head slightly above the level of your heart by using a couple of pillows. Do not massage or rub the area for one week. Patients should also refrain from having any facials or microdermabrasions on the injected area for at least one week.
ARE THERE PROCEDURES/TREATMENTS PERFORMED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A JUVEDERM ULTRA PLUS INJECTION?
Patients who receive Juvederm Ultra Plus injections may combine the treatment in conjunction with topical Retin-A, topical vitamin C, topical vitamin E, microdermabrasion, and facial peels.
