Hydroquinone is used to lighten the dark patches of skin called “melasma” or ”hyperpigmentation” often caused by hormones due to; pregnancy, birth control pills and hormone medications as well as any injury to the skin.

There are some misunderstandings and falsehoods regarding facts associated with this product. One myth is that hydroquinone is banned in other countries. The truth is that it is regulated-not banned. Hydroquinone products containing 2% is available over the counter in the United States; anything higher requires a prescription. As of June 30, 2019 products containing 4% or higher will require a prescription in Canada. All percentages of hydroquinone products require a prescription in Europe.

In the United States, the prescription strength is 4% and has a 40 plus year history of safe and effective use. Millions of these products have been prescribed.
