What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler (HA filler). HA is a complex sugar that is identical to the hyaluronic acid your body naturally makes and helps the skin retain moisture. Juvederm is synthetically made, and it is not derived from humans or animals. Because it’s identical to the naturally occurring substance in your own body, it breaks down naturally at the injection sites.

We offer a number of different types of Juvederm, including the following:

  • Juvederm Volbella XC: used for lip augmentation and lines around the lip area
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: corrects lines and wrinkles and facial folds
  • Juvederm Volux XC: improves jawline definition
  • Juvederm Vollure XC: corrects moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles
  • Juvederm Voluma XC: corrects volume loss in the cheeks, used for chin augmentation, and can address hollowing of the temples

Juvederm Treatment Areas

Juvéderm can be used on a variety of areas of the face. It can be injected into the cheeks, under the eyes, lips, jawline, and nasolabial folds. It can also address crow’s feet, smoker’s lines, along the temples, and on marionette lines.

How Does Juvéderm Work?

When Juvederm is injected into the facial tissue, it lifts deep lines, wrinkles, depressions, or scars so that they are level with the surrounding skin and fills in volume loss caused by aging. It will ultimately smooth wrinkles and folds to rejuvenate a more youthful appearance.

Where is Juvéderm Used?

Juvederm can be used anywhere on the face, but it adds volume and is best suited for superficial wrinkles and depressed scars, and lip augmentation. The ideal locations for the filler are the wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella), upper and lower lip (smoker’s lines or lipstick lines), marionette lines around the mouth and chin, hollow grooves under the eyes (tear trough deformities), age-related volume loss, and any depressed scars on the face. During your consultation, the best dermal fillers for your specific concern(s) and desired results will be determined.

Are There Different Types of Hyaluronic Acid?

Currently, there are two companies that make hyaluronic acid injectable gel. Medicis makes Restylane and Perlane, and Allergan makes Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Ultra Plus.

Hyaluronic acid fillers come in two forms: a thin form and a thick form. A useful analogy is that thin fillers (Juvederm Ultra or Restylane) are like jelly; it would flatten out if left out on a table. The thick form of gel (Juvederm Ultra Plus or Perlane) is like JELL-O; it has more structural integrity and retains its shape on a table.

Because the thicker formula has more structural integrity, it is better at lifting deep wrinkles like smile lines (also called laugh lines or nasolabial folds), and marionette lines, and replacing the facial volume lost due to the aging process; it also lasts longer. The thinner gel is better at filling fine wrinkles of the upper and lower lip, the eyebrows, and superficial scars. They can also be used for non-surgical lip augmentation.

All types of hyaluronic acid fillers can be completely dissolved and removed within 24 hours by the injection of an enzyme.

Juvederm vs. Restylane

Juvéderm and Restylane are both hyaluronic acid fillers, which means they are very similar, but they do have some differences. Juvederm is typically a softer and more natural-looking gel filler, while Restylane tends to have a firmer consistency for more structured and defined results. Beyond that, they both last a year or more and require repeated treatments to maintain results.

Does Juvederm Work Instantly?

Juvederm works instantly to lift wrinkles, depressions, and scars, and to restore the volume lost during the aging process.

How Long Does Juvederm Last?

The duration of Juvederm varies for each patient and procedure. There are three general rules with Juvederm:

  1. The closer to the mouth you inject Juvéderm, the faster the filler breaks down.
  2. The more superficial you inject Juvéderm, the longer it lasts.
  3. There are no guarantees of duration when it comes to Juvéderm. During the consultation, Dr. Stanislaw will give you general guidelines or ranges for the duration of your specific application.

How Many Visits Are There for a Juvederm Injection?

Unless you have had injectable fillers before and know exactly what you want, a consultation is necessary to discuss your concerns and educate you about your treatment options. Once the appropriate injectable filler has been determined based on your expectations, a treatment date will be set. The injection process may take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the amount to be injected. There is usually a follow-up appointment 10 to 14 days after Juvéderm injections.

Is There Downtime After a Juvéderm Injection?

Immediately after the injection, there may be some mild redness and swelling. This usually goes away after one day. During this time, you’ll want to minimize strenuous exercise, exposure to extensive sun or heat, and alcoholic beverages within the first 24 hours following treatment

Will I Have a Bruise After a Juvéderm Injection?

The incidence of bruising depends on the location and depth of the injection and the individual patient. Therefore, the chance of bruising after a Juvéderm injection is best discussed during the consultation prior to the injection appointment. If a bruise does occur, it can be covered with makeup after your procedure.

In case you do have a bruise, Dr. Stanislaw advises his patients not to book a Juvederm injection 10 days prior to any engagement where a bruise may be unacceptable (i.e., a party or a wedding).

How Much Discomfort is Associated with a Juvederm Injection?

There is very little discomfort during a Juvederm injection. A topical numbing cream can be applied to the area before the injection if you are concerned about injection pain, however, most people do not require this. In addition, there is a small amount of numbing medication mixed into the Juvederm, so the injection itself makes you temporarily numb.

A very small percentage of patients complain of a mild ache for a day or two at the site of the injection. This is easily controlled with Motrin or Tylenol.

 Juvéderm Side Effects & Safety

As with any treatment, Juvéderm comes with some side effects and risks. That said, the dermal filler has been time-tested and has been proven safe and effective. Some of the side effects to look out for include:

  • Temporary discoloration
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness at the injection site

What Are My Restrictions After a Juvederm Injection?

  • You should apply cold packs to the injected area for the first 24 hours after the injection.
  • You should not massage or rub the area for one week.
  • No facials or microdermabrasion of the injected area for one week after the Juvederm injection.
  • You can wear makeup immediately after the injection.
  • No bending, lifting, or straining following the injection. This rule may apply for one day following the injection, all the way up to one week, depending on the area that was injected.
  • Keep your head elevated for one day to one week, again depending on the area that was injected.

FAQs

How long does Juvederm usually last?

Juvederm can last from 6-18 months.

Can juvederm migrate?

Juvederm can migrate in rare cases, but this is not typical when the filler is placed by a skilled injector. Choosing an experienced provider helps minimize the risk and ensures the product stays where it is intended.

Can you drink alcohol after Juvederm?

It’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after treatment. Drinking too soon can increase the risk of swelling or bruising.

Can you split a syringe of Juvederm?

Yes, a syringe can be split between different areas during the same appointment. This allows for subtle enhancements in more than one location if needed.

Can you wash your face after Juvederm?

You can gently wash your face after Juvederm, but avoid applying too much pressure. It’s important not to rub or massage the treated areas right away.

Does juvederm look natural?

When done by an experienced injector, Juvederm creates soft, natural-looking results. It enhances your features without making you look overdone.

How much is a syringe of Juvederm?

The cost of a syringe of Juvederm can vary depending on the type of filler, the clinic, and the location. Prices are generally discussed during a consultation so the treatment plan can be tailored to your goals.

Is it normal to have bumps after Juvederm?

Yes, it’s common to notice small bumps or swelling right after Juvederm. These usually smooth out as the filler settles and the swelling goes down.

Is one syringe of Juvederm enough for lips?

One syringe is often enough to achieve natural-looking lip enhancement. However, the amount needed depends on your starting lip shape and your desired results.

Can you get half a syringe of Juvederm?

Some patients choose to have only half a syringe for a more conservative look. This is a good option if you want a subtle enhancement or are new to filler.

Does juvederm stimulate collagen?

Juvederm does not directly stimulate collagen production. Instead, it restores volume and smoothness by attracting water to the treated area.

Procedures / Treatments Often Performed in Conjunction with a Juvederm Injection

When Juvederm is injected into embedded wrinkles between the eyebrows, Botox Cosmetic or Dysport are often used at the same time to address the dynamic wrinkles.

Juvederm injections are often combined with topical Retin-A, topical Vitamin C, topical Vitamin E, Microdermabrasion, and Facial Peels.

Juvederm injections are often performed approximately one month after surgical procedures, such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and facelifts. The Juvederm injections are primarily used to restore the volume lost during the aging process, which the surgical procedures do not correct.
