Using Botox to Treat Excessive Sweating

If you suffer from excessive sweating, you’re not alone. Millions of people experience this frustrating condition, often without an apparent reason. Excess sweating can impact your daily comfort, clothing choices, confidence, and mental health. Fortunately, Botox® injections have become an FDA-approved, effective way to treat primary hyperhidrosis, especially in the underarms.

What is Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by too much sweat in certain areas of the body, far beyond what’s needed to regulate body temperature. This sweating is often unrelated to heat, physical activity, or emotional triggers. It can be classified into two types:

Sweat is produced by eccrine glands and apocrine glands, which are closely connected to your nervous system. For people with hyperhidrosis, the nerves that control sweating are overactive even when sweating isn’t necessary. This can lead to consistent skin irritation, and when the body temperature rises, it can make sweating worse.

How Does Botox Work As a Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Botulinum toxin injections, commonly known as Botox, work by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. When injected into the affected area, Botox temporarily halts the glands’ ability to produce sweat. This method is especially effective for treating axillary hyperhidrosis.

What to Expect

The procedure involves a series of Botox injections into the treated area, usually completed in less than 30 minutes. A fine needle is used to inject the botulinum toxin just beneath the skin at the injection site. Most patients describe the discomfort as mild, similar to a quick pinch.

How Long Does Botox Last

The effects of Botox for hyperhidrosis usually begin within 2–7 days after treatment and reach full effect by about two weeks. Most patients enjoy dryness in the treated area for 4 to 6 months, though some may experience relief for up to a year. Once sweating returns, maintenance treatments can be scheduled.

Who is a Good Candidate for Underarm Botox?

Botox is most useful for people who want to avoid more invasive options; specifically, you may be a candidate if:

Underarm Botox Aftercare

After treatment, it’s best to avoid rubbing or massaging the injection site for at least 24 hours. Do not apply deodorant immediately after receiving injections in the armpits. Most people return to normal activities the same day, but watch for rare side effects like blurred vision, shaking hands, or signs of skin infection.
